2005 has begun

A new years resolution to update my blog more often is a darn good idea. I’m going to give it a whirl. This is actually one of the toughest kind of resolutions for me to keep. But I’ll focus on the fact that any content is better than no content. And try to remember what Ben Franklin said (paraphrased): “Any day that goes by where you don’t learn anything is a day wasted”

Actually, the idea for this resolution comes a couple days late and it comes from my friend William Bilancio. I wish him sucess in keeping it up.

So without further ado:

Today I am working hard on the LUG/IP GNU/Linux ISO. I’ve been updating packages and such. Mostly I’ve been installing and removing packages and just contending with the issue of limited space. There are a lot of things we’d like to put on there, but we’ve already run out of space once. We’re also having major issues with the menus and desktops between KDE and Gnome. In general, I’m moving away from applications bundled in big kde packages and towards independent packages. This will help save space by removing some redundancies. I know this means that a lot of good stuff will be removed, but I’m trying to focus on the fact that this is a bootable CD. I realize that if I remove kdepim, then you won’t be able to connect to your cell phone via Kandy, but then… why would you want to move data from/to your cell phone from a medium you can’t update. (note: if anyone needs an emergency backup from their cell phone and this is the only way to do it… tell me now).

Major changes over the last couple of days: update Firefox and install Thunderbird. Install inkscape and pan. Remove kdenetwork. I fixed most of the menu conflicts and icons, and put custom KDE and Gnome splashes in. All the custom images and graphics are done by LUG/IP board member John LeMasney

Anyone interested in a laundry list of what’s going on should feel free to check out our issues log.

Other than the ISO, I’ve just been hanging out. I’ve resumed working out on a regular basis at PEAC, a gym which is only about 1/4 mile away (extremely convenient). And I’m getting ready to build an HTPC, so I’ve been looking at hardware and playing around with my new Hauppauge PVR150. More on that later as things develop.
