That’s it! Enough is Enough

Filed under: Personal — Gregory Haase @ 9:50 am

After following the advice of the D-Link tech support web site, and speaking with them over the phone, I finally gave up of the D-Link router and returned it.

Here’s the lowdown. First of all, the logging tool on the router was default set at a level where there were 6 pages of logged information within the first 2 hours. The router kept hanging every couple of hours until I completely turned the log off. Second, I had a bunch of “virtual applications” open… that’s what they call Port Forwarding. I started disabling these one at a time, and the interval between hangs increased for each one. This seemed in agreement with the tech support article that said if the router hangs, you may need to disable virtual applications. Well, I have certain needs, and I can only disable so many.

So I ran myself down to the bare minimum, and things seemed to be working. Until yesterday afternoon when my wife and I were apparently both logged into squirrelmail. Apache shows there were a couple of other people surfing around here at the same time. So called D-Link, and their support person told me that the router would hang if there was too much activity.

To me, that’s just unacceptible. I had that old Netgear router running for over a year without freezing. So I returned it and bought the newer SuperG 108 MB/s WGT624 v2 instead. Figuring I could count on the brand, and the enhanced features (mostly speed) over my older MR814 v1. At first, I considered that maybe I had a bad unit, and was going to get a replacement, but after review tech support documentation that seemed to justify my lousy experience, I just couldn’t bring myself to give D-Link my money (or let them keep it, rather).

Unfortunately, it wasn’t going to be that easy. I came home and set up the router and couldn’t get it working. I called Tech Support, and it turned out to be faulty firmware, so I had to rush back and get a replacement just before the store closed. Luckily, the replacement was fine and I was up and running again in no time.

  1. D-Link? They haven’t made quality hardware in years. I stick to Netgear or Linksys. Linksys has the street creds of using Cisco software and - depending on the model - hardware. Netgear has always been a favorite of mine. Good and solid. But maybe I’m just a sucker for their metal boxes.
