I recently upgraded my router from the Netgear MR814 (802.11b) to a D-Link DI-524 (802.11g) in hopes to pick up a little more speed while hanging out in various locations of the house with the laptop.
Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that I would be trading speed with a router that wanted to do a bit of hanging on its own. It’s hung up 4 times in the last 4 days, and is quickly setting itself up as a candidate for a return.
However, I’m going to give it one last shot. The D-Link support page mentions that the router may hang in cases of intense network traffic, if too many virtual applications (port routing) are enabled, etc. Well, if it can’t hack it, it can’t hack it. The Netgear didn’t seem to have much of a problem though. So I’m suspicious that it’s because the thing was trying to log every single packet in and out, and the log files were quickly overwhelming the little machine. So I trimmed back the logging and I hope that will fix the issue. If not, it *will* be returned, as I can’t disable any of the virtual applications without losing significant functionalilty… and that’s just not going to happen.
