Don’t Panic – I did it intentionally

Filed under: Personal — Gregory Haase @ 11:09 am

After months of publishing (and not publishing) through the front page of the forum and getting little or no feedback, I’ve decided to move from the LSP (www.lunabyte.com) and YaBB SE (simplemachines.org) combination to a blog script. This decision was also eased by the fact that I’m no longer a developer over at LSP and I don’t have much at stake by not running it. I’ve found this rather wonderful script in WordPress that suits me well. But don’t panic! The old forum is still alive and kicking over here. And thanks to the wonders of Virtual Directories in Apache, all of your old bookmarks and links won’t need to change.

About My Template

Alright. The first thing I have to say about this template is that you’re absolutely not allowed to laugh at it under any circumstances. There are actually valid reasons why it’s as lame as it is. I’m a bit pressed for time at the moment, because I’ll be leaving for Japan on Wednesday morning. I wanted to get the blog up and running before I left, because if there’s a chance I can find a place to go online while I’m there, I’d like to type a few notes about the trip.

Unfortunately, I accidently removed GIMP from my system on Friday night. I did an apt-get upgrade, and noticed that it was installing a new version of gimp-data, but I didn’t pay attention to the fact that it was removing GIMP. Now I have a version conflict with some library, and I can’t upgrade to the next version. Now, I’m sure it’s my mistake, because I should have seen that it was trying to remove GIMP, but I would think that the package maintainers could have done something to prevent that from happening. But I guess that gimp-data isn’t (and shouldn’t) be dependent on GIMP, so there you go.

The second thing I have to tell you is that this template is a rip-off. Not a complete rip-off, mind you… I’ve definitely made it my own with some significant changes, but a rip-off none the less. The original template, Simple Sky, was done by Chris M and can be found at alexking.org. This template was released under the GPL so there are no legal issues with me using it in this way. I’m just required to state that I modified it, and tell you where to get the original.

What You Can Expect Here

I’m going to make a concerted effort to keep this thing current. Now, I always say that, and then things fall by the wayside. But I’m going to try none-the-less. I basically plan to keep it running along the same veins as the Rant and Rave news categories on the old forum. Also, in the blogging spirit, I hope to have more of an online update of my life. Obviously, this isn’t of much interest to most of you, so I’ll keep all that stuff tucked away nicely in a separate category. I also recently purchased a new digital camera, so I’m hoping to upload some cool pics – particularly from the trip.

I’m also eventually going to flush out the site with some additional pages… about me… that type of thing. And after I get back from my trip, I’m going to actually put some graphics on the site (provided I get the GIMP running again) and try to spruce it up a bit. As always comments and critiques are welcome.

  1. UPDATE
Evidently the folks at Debian finally got around to upgrading the library that GIMP needed, as I was finally able to reinstall it this afternoon. Of course, that made little difference when I fired up the GIMP and found that I was completely uninspired to do anything with it. I was at least able to through a random background image together. I had absolutely no clue what to do with the main banner, so I just through lorum ipsum in there for now. Maybe when I get back from vacation, I will have recharged my creative influences a bit.

I also took the opportunity to run upstairs to check the site on IE 6.0 with my wife’s computer. It’s a good thing I did too… because it turned out that the style was a complete mess! It’s tolerable now. There are still some weird things going on, but nothing too annoying, and you probably wouldn’t notice unless you were specifically looking for it.
